BAK Industries has protected the beds of truck drivers for more than 30 years. They make hard folding, rolling, and retractable tonneau covers that are built to last. One of their most popular flappable models is the cleverly named BAKFlip G2.

In this BAKFlip G2 review, we’ll take an in-depth look at what this truck bed cover has to offer.

What Is the BAKFlip G2?

BAK BAKFlip G2 Hard Folding Truck Bed Tonneau Cover | 226329 | Fits 2015-20 Ford F150 5'6" Bed

The BAKFlip G2 is a weatherproof tonneau cover the stretches the length of a truck bed. The device has three connecting panels, so you can wholly or partially open the back. These best-selling hard folding covers will also automatically engage with the railing when you close it again.

This model is part of the second generation of original hard folding covers from BAK Industries. One notable innovation was the company’s addition of an integrated buckle system. It lets you drive with the cover opened, closed, or partially opened, depending on preference.

BAKFlip G2’s Best Features

Design

The BAKFlip G2 considers all scenarios with its design. For starters, the installation process is intuitive and doesn’t require a drill. The cover combines heavy-duty security while being little enough to fold back with a single hand.

The interior panels utilize aircraft-grade aluminum for a durable structure. There is also a built-in drainage system that channels any water away from the cover's top, through plastic tubes, and off the truck. BAK Industries backs the design with a two-year warranty.

Material

One of the calling cards of the BAKFlip G2 is its durability. This tonneau cover is tough enough to stand up the elements, whether you live in the scorching sun of Scottsdale or the ceaseless snow of St. Paul. BAK Industries lists the device as resistant to scratches, sun, and water.

The weather-resistant exterior is attributable to the powder-coated panels. The gloss-black outside protects the aluminum panels on the inside while providing a sleek finish. There are also EPDM weather seals to prevent water from leaking in through the cracks.

  • Outstanding value for the price

What We Didn’t Like About the BAKFlip G2

  • Cables to open sections are challenging to locate

Who Is the BAKFlip G2 for?

If you want the ultimate security for their truck, you should check out the BAKFlip G2. The cover tightly seals the edges of the entire truck bed while offering folding flexibility when in action. The BAKFlip G2 is ideal for cargo management and is compatible with most truck bed accessories.

In addition to its safety, the tonneau cover is straightforward when it comes to operating. You don’t have to struggle to fold or refold the panels, thanks to an automatic latching system. The BAKFlip G2 also utilizes clamps to secure the cover to the truck bed, so installation doesn’t require technical expertise.

How to Install the BAKFlip G2

You can find a complete set of BAKFlip G2 instructions here. The company recommends having a 9.16 wrench or socket, and the option of a 7.8 drill bit and drill. Additionally, you will need the following parts:

  • 1 hard folding cover

  • 3 D-shaped cab bumpers

  • 1 bulkhead seal (3/4” x ¾” x truck’s width)

  • 1 pair of BAKFlip rails

  • 2 black drain tubes

  • 6 clamps

  • 2 elevator bolts

  • 4 rubber washers

  • 2 large flat washers

  • 2 lock washers

  • 2 star knobs or thumb screw

  • 2 buckle ends

  • 4 machine screws

  • 4 threaded posts

  • 8 angle shims (depending on the system)

  • 2 spacer shims (depending on the system)

Step 1: Install the cab/bulkhead seal if the truck does not have a bed liner. During this step, make sure to wipe the surface with isopropyl alcohol. If the vehicle does have a bed liner, you don’t need the seal.

Step 2: Close the tailgate and place the BAKFlip rail on the truck bed. Clamp the rail so it is square and facing the front of the vehicle.

Step 3: Double-check to see that the teeth of the clamp align with the rail slots for a secure grip.

Step 4: Place downward pressure on the rail and tighten the clamp. Make sure the rail is flush.

Step 5: Place the second clamp near the center of the rail.

Step 6: Place the rear clamp about six inches from the tailgate. The clamps should be snug at about 10 ft/lbs — repeat steps on the opposite side.

Step 7: Clip the prop rods to the ball mount on the rail.

Step 8: Set the folded cover on the rails toward the front of the vehicle.

Step 9: Use a screwdriver to install the two buck ends into the pre-drilled holes on the front header via the threaded posts and machine screws.

Step 10: Fold down the panels and ensure they align with the mounting holes.

Step 11: Install the three cab bumpers along the upper edge of the BAKFlip, where the tonneau cover meets the truck cab.

Step 12: Insert the flat bolt with a rubber washer, stainless steel washer, lock washer, and five-star finger knob through the front panel with the silver slotted bracket on the other side. Repeat on the opposite side. Don’t tighten it all the way yet.

Step 13: Unfold the cover towards the tailgate. Once the cover fits, rest the flap seal on the top of the tailgate.

Step 14: Tighten the knobs until the lock washer is flat, and the knob is secure to the bracket.

Step 15: Route the front drain hoses from the end of the BAKFlip rail through the plugs. If you have a plastic bed liner, run the tubes behind or under the liner.

Conclusion

The BAKFlip G2 features high-durability, a low-profile design, automatic latching, weather-resistance, flexible panels, and a weight-rating up to 300 pounds. If you want a truck bed cover that’s built to last, the BAKFlip G2 has you covered.
